Solutions for the Planet & Artificial Intelligence

March 24, 2025

Everywhere we look, the world is talking about Artificial Intelligence (AI).

AI is an innovation which enables computer system to perform tasks that are typically associated with human beings. For example, learning, problem solving, and decision making.
Here at Solutions for the Planet, we’ve been reflecting on how AI should be used in our business and, crucially, when it should not.

Jen [CEO] said “At Solutions for the Planet, we work with young people who are always two steps ahead with technology. As an organisation that champions innovation and alongside sustainability, we must consider the role AI plays. AI is reshaping efficiency and transforming working practises across all walks of life, and it’s crucial that we stay informed and intentional about how we integrate it into our work.”

Lauren, Youth Insights Programme Manager and Interim Comms Lead, recently attended a webinar hosted by Naturally Social, which exploredHow to Save 10+ Hours a Week on Content Creation with AI Tools’.

It was amazing to see just how many tools there are that use AI to make social media work more efficiently. For example, if we collected hours of footage from one of our Big Ideas Finals or a Youth Insights Panel session, AI could help to identify key pieces of footage so that we can create engaging video content.”

It’s important to find a balance, however, between gaining efficiencies and maintaining our authentic voice. Not to mention, there are environmental impacts to consider when using Artificial Intelligence.

“AI has massive potential to enhance our efficiency, but we can’t ignore its environmental footprint. The energy and water required to power AI is enormous—but then again, so is the energy required to power humans! If AI can help me, and our team, deploy energy more wisely, that’s worth exploring. It’s about finding balance, being thoughtful and conscious in our interaction with AI and ensuring that the benefits of AI outweigh its costs to the planet.”

So, what does this new learning mean for Solutions for the Planet moving forward?

“AI presents opportunities and challenges, and we need to navigate both responsibly. That’s why we’ve introduced guidelines for teachers and policies for our team, addressing key areas like creativity, authenticity, safeguarding, data protection, and, of course, efficiency. As a small business, the ability to use AI to streamline documents, strategise, summarise and, in some cases, co-create is a game-changer. But we also recognise that AI is ever evolving, and there are no clear-cut answers. Our approach will continue to adapt as we learn more about its impact and potential.”
