“I’ve already signed up for another year!”

I got involved in the Big Ideas Programme because I liked concept of helping young people develop new skills while at the same time contributing to my own personal development.  The fact that their ideas may help with social or environmental issues was also very appealing.

Through the programme, the students have learnt how to work as a team.  They know how to develop their business idea into a business plan as well as how to present the idea to the business community. Watching the development of the young people has been the best part for me.  The way they grow in confidence and begin to believe in their idea.  Also, the creativity you find in the most unexpected places. The most challenging part was not telling the team what to do but asking the right questions so they can figure it out for themselves.

I have learnt to never underestimate young people and to give them a chance to express themselves.  Some of the ideas have been truly amazing!  On a personal level, I have improved my communication and leadership skills and increased my knowledge of issues the planet is facing. I have also gained satisfaction from helping others by passing on my experience and encouraging them to carry on with their ideas.

I was so proud of the young people who presented their ideas at the finals. The way they had progressed through the competition and the new skills they had developed was clear to see.  I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process.  The team from Solutions for the Planet are very friendly and approachable and I thank them for their continued support.
