CREST Awards on the Big Ideas programme!

BSA CREST Awards and Solutions for the Planet

As our schools are aware, since the start of the 2016/17 Big Ideas programme, Solutions for the Planet has been working with the British Science Association as a CREST Award delivery partner.  Our Global Good Award-winning Big Ideas programme is CREST-accredited at both Discovery and Bronze Level.

All students whose teams submit their completed business plan into our Big Ideas Competition at the end of March, and continue on to present their Big Idea at a Regional Final, are eligible for and will receive a Bronze CREST Award!  These Awards are sponsored by Solutions for the Planet’s business partners, and the applications for them will be submitted by S4TP.  As soon as we receive the certificates, we will contact the schools so they can arrange to present them to their students.

As of this year, all the members of the school teams that participate in a Big Ideas Day are eligible for a CREST Discovery Award.  This must be applied and paid for by the school, but the eligibility is covered by being part of the Big Ideas programme.

“The BSA believes that science and technology are a central part of our culture, and that everyone should feel able to be involved. The Solutions for the Planet Big Ideas Competition Final was so inspiring because of the young people who are leading the innovation and driving forward ideas themselves – not sitting back and waiting for ‘professionals’ to come up with solutions to the planet’s problems. All the Big Ideas were highly impressive, and I have no doubt that many will go on to make a real difference to people’s lives. The essence of the BSA’s CREST Awards is to reward excellent creative STEM project work – and this was certainly excellent!” Maria Rossini, Head of Education

The Benefits of CREST Awards

Since 2015, over 1000 young people have been awarded a CREST Bronze Award for making it to a regional final in the Big Ideas Competition. And this year, we also have nearly 2000 young people who have received their CREST Discovery Award!  That’s a lot of potential changemakers out there! We encourage all our CREST Award-winners to consider applying to join the CREST Youth panel: https://help.crestawards.org/portal/kb/articles/crest-youth-panel .

“CREST helps young people become independent and reflective learners through enquiry-based project work.

CREST is respected by universities and employers and enhances students’ UCAS personal statements.  When you’re applying for university, for an apprenticeship or for a job, you can use CREST to enhance your application – they’re well regarded, high-quality and a tangible recognition of success.  https://help.crestawards.org/portal/kb/articles/using-crest-for-university-or-job-applications

CREST can be used in conjunction with other activities and schemes, including the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Extended Project Qualifications (EPQs) and the Big Bang Competition.”

Students who achieve their CREST Bronze Award on Solutions for the Planet’s Big Ideas programme, and then continue through to the National Final and beyond, could find themselves eligible to apply independently for the CREST Silver Award, and there was recently some incredibly positive impact findings about that award, as can be read in the Impact Report here.  “Students who participate in CREST Silver achieve higher grades and are more likely to study STEM subjects at AS level. The benefits are magnified for disadvantaged students.”
