Each month we are introducing the wonderful mentors that support the Big Ideas programme, in a feature we are calling ‘Meet the Mentor’. The programme and the students on it simply would not be the same if we didn’t have this mentor support from our business partners, and the mentors themselves get an awful lot out of it too.
Find out more about the range of interesting and diverse mentors we work with on our Meet the Mentors page on the website!
Allow me to introduce one of our SGN mentors from the South East region – Jodie Carroll.
Name: Jodie Carroll
Position: Property Coordinator – Property Division, SGN
· Please describe your role:
I work within the Property Team at SGN, my main role within the team is to support with maximising income through land sales and leasing opportunities for our company in Scotland and England, along with providing support for gasholder dismantlement, estates management and any property/land related enquiries and complaints.
· Please describe your route to this role:
Whilst at school I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I completed sixth form (studying some diverse subjects to keep my options open), took 3 A levels, and after this started to have a look for some jobs. I knew I wanted to work in a large company where I would have the opportunity to grow and develop my skills. I came across an opportunity for Property Coordinator within SGN, so I thought I would give it a go. My job has developed since and I haven’t looked back.
· What advice do you have for young people interested in either following a similar route to you or in working for your business/sector?
My advice to young people starting to look at career opportunities would be to follow your goals and never give up. I would also say there are so many jobs available that you would never have even thought existed, so always try and be open to trying new things and different experiences.
· Why did you get involved in S4TP’s Big Ideas programme?
I got involved with Solutions for the Planet because I wanted to use my experiences and skill set to help others. I expected to develop my mentoring skills to help me in the workplace.
· What involvement have you had so far?
I have been involved in the programme for around a year and have loved every minute. My first year of the competition was brilliant. I was able to work with a team from start to finish and they made it to the final of the competition, allowing them to present their idea at the Houses of Parliament.
· Has participating met your expectations?
Participating has gone above and beyond my expectations. I really didn’t expect to have such a good relationship with local schools and students. I have most definitely gained all and more than what I wanted to, and have been able to contribute by visiting the schools on a regular basis and building good relationships with the students.
· What has been the best part about participating in the programme?
The best part about participating in the programme is watching students develop and grow, achieving things they didn’t think was possible.
· What has been the most challenging part about participating in the programme?
The most challenging part of the programme is trying to balance work with mentoring. I like to spend as much time as I can with the students working on their ideas to make them the best they can be, but still must keep on top of my workload.
· What have you learnt, through participating, about yourself, the company and sector you work for, young people, schools and skills development?
Through participating I have discovered that my skills and knowledge I’ve learnt over the last year working for SGN have really helped my mentoring. I feel I can relate the student’s ideas to the real world more now. I’ve learned that young people are very enthusiastic and creative with their ideas allowing them to suggest ideas that I never would have thought of.
· What would you say to others considering participating in the programme?
I would definitely encourage others to participate in the programme.
We are proud and grateful to have you on board Jodie – thank you for all your help!
