North East Big Ideas Days launch!
In October Solutions for the Planet delivered their first Big Ideas Day of 2017 in the North-East! We visited The Oaks School in Spennymoor along with four of our newly trained mentors from partner company Mears Group.
The day was a huge success as we engaged over 90 students with moderate special educational needs (SEN) in our core Big Ideas Programme. We discussed issues including urbanisation, air pollution and changing weather patterns which were made all the more tangible considering the impending arrival of storm Ophelia and the Sahara dust filling the skies outside! We even took a short break so the students could head outside to see the gloomy red sky and think about climate change in their area.
Oaks students had a brilliant day learning about sustainability challenges and identifying problems that they would like to solve. Our Mears mentors “Really enjoyed listening to the students’ ideas and suggestions of ways to solve the problems they addressed. Totally blown away by their ideas!” These mentors will head back to the school in the coming weeks to support the teams as they turn their Ideas into a business plan for submission into the Big Ideas Competition.
Solutions for the Planet would like to extend a huge thank you to the many teachers who supported this Big Ideas Day (our first in an SEN school) and made the experience so positive. We look forward to seeing how your Big Ideas develop in the coming months!
