Big Ideas Day at Hodge Hill College

On Thursday 28th October, we kicked off the Solutions for the Planet Big Ideas Competition 2017/18 with our first Big Ideas Day.  It was held at Hodge Hill College, in Birmingham.  Hodge Hill College and S4TP have had a long partnership, and this is our 4th year and 5th Big Ideas Day there. kids working on Big Ideas Day posters at Hodge Hill College

Hodge Hill College is an 11-16 co-educational school serving a wide area to the north and east of the centre of Birmingham.  Some 86% of pupils come from ethnic minority communities and their pupils span the range of socio-economic status, though a significant proportion come from homes suffering some disadvantage. At present 37 percent of pupils qualify for a free school meal.  The school has a very strong commitment to improvement and development and was rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted in 2016.

Daisy Priest, who runs the Big Ideas Programme at Hodge Hill College as one of her many enrichment projects, and her co-lead Benjamin Humphris, mentored the students alongside two of our experienced business mentors – Luke Plimmer, from Tarmac in Solihull, and Darnell Francis, from Brammer, Buck&Hickman in Manchester.

Can I say a big Thank You to you all for delivering such an awesome Big Ideas Day workshop and that it was once again a great pleasure to see such excitement and enthusiasm build up in the students’ faces as the day progressed to the finale: to share their Big Idea with everyone in West Hall.’

We look forward to guiding the students through their development sessions as they turn their Big Ideas into viable business plans, and hopefully make it all the way to the National Finals at the Palace of Westminster!
